{"id":94,"date":"2008-10-30T23:22:52","date_gmt":"2008-10-30T20:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.held.org.il\/blog\/?p=94"},"modified":"2008-10-30T23:22:52","modified_gmt":"2008-10-30T20:22:52","slug":"init-script-dependency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.held.org.il\/blog\/2008\/10\/init-script-dependency\/","title":{"rendered":"Init script dependency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\"Behind my back\", a new feature was added to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxfoundation.org\/en\/LSB\">LSB<\/a> specification and to Debian Lenny accordingly: <strong>Init scripts dependency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new LSB <a href=\"http:\/\/refspecs.linux-foundation.org\/LSB_3.2.0\/LSB-Core-generic\/LSB-Core-generic\/initscrcomconv.html\">defines new fields<\/a> for init script headers: <em>Required<\/em>, <em>Should<\/em> (like <em>Required<\/em> but only if installed) and <em>Provides<\/em>. This means that the init system should take care of <strong>ordering<\/strong> the init scripts according to their dependencies (i.e. \"NFS\" service requires \"portmap\" service which requires network and thus order should be Network -&gt; Portmap -&gt; NFS). This eliminates the need to give funny <strong>\"K01\/S99\"<\/strong>-style numbers manually to each service.<\/p>\n<p>Cool. But is it enough? The init system is several decades old. Maybe we need something revolutionary such as <a href=\"http:\/\/upstart.ubuntu.com\/\">Upstart<\/a> or Solaris <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.com\/bigadmin\/content\/selfheal\/smf-quickstart.jsp\">SMF<\/a>. Features like starting\/stopping independent services in parallel, service monitoring (watchdog\/keepalive), or other crazy ideas that Upstart &amp; SMF implement.<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu's Upstart was adopted also by Fedora 9; this means that RHEL6 might use Upstart as well. In that case, the revolution is over..
